Over at Cats Who Code they have a great about speeding up your Website using Apache’s mod_deflate and header expires. It’s a guest post by Hayes Potter – a 13 year old web developer!
Whilst I have some reservations about the extra CPU load on deflating files vs just waiting for the page to load, it’s defiantly a good read and has some smart tips.
Head on over to Cats Who Code for the full article.

Would this code go above or below my www. to non www. redirect code in the .htaccess file?
Cheers,
Stan
That’s a good question Stan. I would say after, but I couldn’t tell you why – it just seems logical.
I had slow server problems sometime back and had to reboot apache everytime because of the extra load. Sold that one. Could nt find the article on that site, I am still looking for ways to reduce the server loads.

AskApache Says
One way around this Jamie is to gzip your files manually/programmatically whenever you make an update… see @http://www.askapache.com/htaccess/speed-up-sites-with-htaccess-caching.html Then you just use mod_rewrite or rely on apaches mod_negotiation to serve the proper file. Thats what I do on my site, you can check out the htaccess tutorial for examples of this.
