I found that there was a pause when connection to my FTP server. It would pause at “Connection established, waiting for welcome message…” this was driving me nuts as I use “Upload to FTP upon save” in dreamweaver to put all my files onto my test server.
This applies to Ubuntu Server 7.10
The pause occurs when proftpd is trying to identify the remote username and here is the solution:
Don’t forget to restart proftpd.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing.
this might also help:
Add to proftpd.conf (outside global scope):
UseReverseDNS off
IdentLookups off
Drupal Sites…
Nice tip. But Seriously.. use your name and just add a link in your reply – just like Commentluv.
Hey thanks alot! I was annoyed at this delay!
UseReverseDNS off
IdentLookups off
Fixed it.
Glad it helped! Whilst it’s not recommend for a Live server, it defiantly speeds up your work on a development server!
It works !! Nearly can’t believe it.
Thanks four your clear and easy to folow instructions.
