NPD: PS3 Destroys Xbox360 | TheSixthAxis

“The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we’re exactly where we expected to be,” said Jack Tretton. “This month’s success can be attributed to the exclusive blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and we’re poised for continued growth into the back half of the year with a much anticipated line-up, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA ’09: The Inside. Additionally, the new PlayStation Network video delivery service will be a big driver for the PS3 and PSP, allowing consumers to extend their multi-media and entertainment experience.”

Here’s the figures:

PlayStation 3 405.5k

PSP 337.4k

Playstation 2 188.8k

Xbox 360 219.8k

Reznor makes $750,000 even when the music is free

ghosts Reznor makes $750,000 even when the music is freeTrent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails made headlines again this week as he released his new, four-part instrumental album Ghosts I-IV, at a variety of price points, including a $300 super-deluxe package. He’s also giving away Ghosts I at no charge, even throwing the tracks up on The Pirate Bay for anyone to download. And it appears to be working quite well for Reznor, who has managed to sell all 2,500 copies of his $300 package without major label backing or much in the way of splashy marketing. If Reznor’s earlier experiments in digital distribution failed to recoup their costs, he’s clearly learned his lesson: grossing $750,000 in the space of three days isn’t a bad haul for any businessperson.

In-Game Communication Coming to PS3

ps3-xmb In-Game Communication Coming to PS3

Ray Maguire, Sony Computer Entertainment UK’s head, recently spilled the beans on an upcoming feature the PlayStation 3 will be getting - in-game communication. Presumably this means being able to have a private chat with friends while playing a game, similar to what you can do on Xbox Live.

Speaking with MCV on the PlayStation 3 reaching one million units at retail in the UK - a mark surpassed faster than either the PlayStation or PlayStation 2 - Maguire stated, “Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios. I’d personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey.”

Now it’s unclear whether or not in-game communication is directly a part of firmware v2.4 or if he was referring to two separate items. Hopefully v2.4 will include in-game XMB support, and that will be what enables you to chat with friends while in-game.

Holy Crap! 10 year old drumming to Tool - Vicarious

For any one who doesn’t know tool, or the shear compleaxity of there music this might be a little lost on you, but this kid is ten and pulling out Vicarious with near Danny Carey percision! Did I mention that he’s only 10!?

For the most part, drummers these days are lazy and talentless - 4/4 drum beats with not too much in the way of ‘music’ to them. The same old and tried beats. Drummers like Danny Carey and TeddyZ (Youtube kid, not sure of his name) really make the drums an instrument of expression! I love it

Check out the video and comment on his you tube page, this is what music and drumming is all about!

Is it Safe to Buy Blu-ray?

blu-ray_logo-755087 Is it Safe to Buy Blu-ray?The folks over at Gizmodo have an interesting read about what to do now that that Sony’s blu-ray is now the crowned HD media format. Generally speaking I find most of Gizmodo’s articles to be heavily one sided and not really worth paying much attention to, but this one I tend to agree with.

Here are the finer points, you can read the full article here

  1. Get the Spec In Order
Now that Blu-ray is fully in the spotlight, it’s got to get its act together spec-wise. You may recall that we lambasted many Blu-ray supporters for only building 1.0 spec players, including the $1000+ home-theater flagships from Sony and Pioneer. Except for Panasonic’s DMP-BD30 and the PlayStation 3 with up-to-date firmware, no current Blu-ray player can even handle the 1.1 spec with picture-in-picture, already appearing in certain Blu-ray discs (and quite the handful of HD DVD titles-but we’ll get to that).
  2. Finalize the Video Library
We only need dual-format players as long as the library is split down HD DVD and Blu-ray lines. We are waiting for Universal, Paramount and DreamWorks to jump to Blu, and even once they do, it’s not a certainty that they can simply re-release everything currently out on HD DVD. Universal claims 150 titles-surely the Bournes will go Blu as soon as Uni does, but how long do I have to wait for a Blu-ray of The Big Lebowski? Hell, it’s almost worth scooping up an ultracheap HD DVD player now just to enjoy that one movie alone, 47 or 48 times in a row. At any rate, some speculation suggests that the remaining HD DVD studios may not even come around until summer or fall, depending on weird smoke-filled-backroom negotiations with Toshiba.
  3. Bring On the Old-Fashioned Electronics Store Competition
Sony’s more affordable new Blu-ray player will hit the market this summer for $400. Nothing built by Sony or anyone else should be considered before then, the one exception being the PS3. But even the Sony standalone at $400 is expensive, especially for a player whose capabilities are more or less the same as Toshiba’s HD-A30 HD DVD player, now (in a price nose dive) selling for around $130. Only when Panasonic, Samsung and LG announce their own Blu-ray 2.0 players, will true competition finally exist. (Pioneer will launch a 2.0 player too, but it probably won’t get involved in a price war.) It surely wouldn’t be long after that that we see a full-spec Blu-ray player for $200 or maybe even less. Our bet is Christmas, since Sony doesn’t seem like it will have anything on the market until “summer” and no one else is talking about their next Blu play.

Again, you can read the full article here, defiantly worth a look for those in the market for a blu-ray player.

Sony’s PS3 headtracking system, how Johnny Lee’s should have worked

ps3_front_main Sonys PS3 headtracking system, how Johnny Lees should have workedJohnny Lee’s head tracking demo using a Wiimote is a fantastic idea and defiantly proves the concept, but it looks like Sony’s trying to take it mainstream in a much less nerdy way. Sony was demonstrating a PS3-based head tracking system at the Game Developers Conference that doesn’t require any special IR glasses to function - it just uses a the Playstation Eye camera to track your head. Can you imagine FPS games with this feature! 4D anyone?

HD DVD has now officially died

Reuters has reported that Toshiba Corp is planning to stop and production and research-and-development of HD-DVD technology according to Japan’s NHK.

Following the latest kick in the pants for the HD-DVD camp when on Friday (15th Feb) Americas Wal-Mart Stores Inc said it would abandon the HD DVD format, becoming the latest in a series of top retailers (Netflix, Best Buy) and movie studios to rally behind Blu-ray technology for high definition DVDs.

Toshiba currently selling HD DVD equipment at stores for the time being but will not put resources into developing new devices, NHK said.

Google’s Android - This will be awesome

Google is working on an Open operation environment for the mobile phones - Android. …”It [Android] is built to be truly open. For example, an application could call upon any of the phone’s core functionality such as making calls, sending text messages, or using the camera, allowing developers to create richer and more cohesive experiences for users. Android is built on the open Linux Kernel. Furthermore, it utilizes a custom virtual machine that has been designed to optimize memory and hardware resources in a mobile environment. Android will be open source; it can be liberally extended to incorporate new cutting edge technologies as they emerge. The platform will continue to evolve as the developer community works together to build innovative mobile applications.”

If Google and its third party developers (you and I) can developed a system that has the office tools of Windows Mobile and the entertainment tools of Apples iPhone then I think we’ll have a fantastic, and not to mention Open Source, choice which can only drive competition forcing Microsoft to offer better Internet and Media capabilities into WiMO and Apple to actually offer a complete system rather than a flashy iPod.

Check the video below where Sergey Brin introduces the concept.

Bad hair day? Maybe, but this guy can defiantly afford to have a bad hair day/month/year… oh hell! he can have a permanent bad hair day!

Bring on more Open Source
