John Martz from Robot Johnny had been commissioned by Derek Balmer, the creator of  Momentile, to create a cheeky greeting page for users who visited the website using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. His post shows his process in producing the final image and is well worth the read.

Very cheeky and light-heated, which is refreshing (not to mention creative!) because I think we, as web developers and designers, are starting to get a little arrogant and elitist towards people who may not know better then to upgrade to a better browser.

I was at home from work yesterday with what can only be described as a man cold. My wife decided that we needed a new baby pram that would carry both our boys (now 2.5 years and 6 weeks). “Great”, I said, “off you go and I’ll lie here feeling sorry for myself”. The house was quite and I got in a nice bit of shut eye before I awoke to her asking me to get it out of the car boot when I’m ready – which really means “Can you get it out of the car boot now I want to look at and admire it.”

So I made some groaning noises to exacerbate (10 points if you make the connection with the link above) my man cold and walked out to the car. Opening the boot I was presented with something that made me laugh so I thought I would share it with you.

I remember seeing this article when it was first published back on January 11th 2008 and nodding whilst i was was reading. I think I made 10 of the 12 Common Photoshop Mistakes and Malpractice when I first started. I know I made 1 of the 12 mistakes many times over which I’ve published below.

For anyone starting out as a Photoshop junior, this is a great article on things to avoid at all costs!

Assuming K=100 is Black

Many new designers, including myself at one point, thought that setting my K in CMYK to 100 would result in black. This is not the case… instead, it results in a dark grey.

Although you can get away with setting your K to 100 for black text, large areas of black should be set to ‘Rich Black’. Try using C=90 M=60 Y=30 K=100 — it will produce a much richer and noticeable black.

I’ve just come across a great post by Brian Hoff at The Design Cubical entitled “14 Tips To Drive Traffic To Your New Design Blog”

One of the first thoughts that went through my mind when starting TDC was, “How do I get people to visit my site?” So what better way to get people to visit than to make them want to visit.

Defiantly worth a read even if you have an existing blog – some great tips!

I stumbled upon Dieter Rams 10 design principles of good design a while ago and I constantly refer to back to them so i thought I would share them with the you. If you don’t know who Dieter Rams is a quick Google search will amaze you and defiantly bring you up to speed on one of the pioneers of modern design.

Here are the

01. Good design is innovative.
It does not copy existing product forms, nor does it produce any kind of novelty just for the sake of it. The essence of innovation must be clearly seen in all of a product’s functions. Current technological development keeps offering new chances for innovative solutions.

02. Good design makes a product useful.
The product is bought or used in order to be used. It must serve a defined purpose — in both primary and additional functions. The most important task of design is to optimize the utility of a product’s usability.

03. Good design is aesthetic.
The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

04. Good design helps us to understand a product.
It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.

05. Good design is unobtrusive.
Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.

06. Good design is honest.
It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it normally is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

07. Good design has longevity.
It does not follow trends that become outdated after a short time. Well designed products differ significantly from short-lived trivial products in today’s throwaway society.

08. Good design is consequent to the last detail.
Nothing must be arbitrary. Thoroughness and accuracy in the design process shows respect toward the user.

09. Good design is concerned with the environment.
Design must make contributions toward a stable environment and sensible raw material situation. This does not only include actual pollution, but also visual pollution and destruction of our environment.

10. Good design is as little design as possible.
Less is better — because it concentrates on the essential aspects and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity!
